Ailments And Remedies
Foreword
New Era Community, 272
The Great Helpers of humanity do not abandon the Earth so long as sufferings go unhealed. Wholehearted fellowship can easily heal the wounds of a friend--but it is necessary to develop the art of thinking in the name of Good. And this is not easy amid the day's hustle and bustle. But the examples of the Great Helpers of humanity can encourage and infuse new forces.
Hierarchy, 418
Diseases are divided as sacred, karmic, and those that are admitted. The first two concepts are easily understood, but precisely in the book Hierarchy one should mention the admitted ones. Who or what permits these diseases? Certainly ignorance and the horror of non-realization. It is not enough not to think about them. Children likewise do not think of them, yet become infected. One should protect oneself in consciousness and create an invulnerable armor of nerve emanations. Even se ary remedy. But even a pill must be swallowed and an ointment applied. There is no effect from a remedy that is in a trunk. Likewise, the Benefaction of Hierarchy must be taken by striving. Thus, an irrevocable striving will afford a healing result.
Fiery World II, 194
You will have to repeat to many that Our remedies are good, as a supplement to psychic energy. Some physical remedies cannot produce the desired result, but psychic energy is reinforced by communion with Hierarchy. Thus, the wise physician first of all will take care to know the condition of his psychic energy and to see that it is in concordance with the Higher forces. Paying attention only to physical qualities has no significance for the future. When We speak about the Fiery World, it means that it is time to be moving forward. It is impossible to remain on the level of the transitory period, when all the foundations of Existence have been forgotten. I affirm that each physician must pay attention to himself in order to feel to what an extent he himself is ready to renew his consciousness, otherwise he will not find fitting words for those who come to him. He will be unable to inquire into the actual causes of ailments. He will not maintain a self-affirmed influence. I do not insist that each physician be a hypnotist, but he must understand the spiritual world of the patient in order to be able to speak about the main thing in the case. The Teaching must disclose paths, but not be merely a pharmacy. Therefore, the copper coin has to be abolished. A tiniest silver one is better.
The crime of speculation has to be prosecuted relentlessly, because the Earth is sick from speculation.
Each epoch has its own plague. At present it is the epidemic of speculation. It must not be thought that humanity has always been plagued with this disease. But this disease brings promise of a radical change, because it cannot pass gradually and a paroxysm of evolution is needed in order to root out this infection. (P.185/186)
3. Keep now in mind that in time of danger you must encircle yourselves with a realization of personal invulnerability, and then send your consciousness to meet My Ray. Imagine mentally how your spark rushes to My current. Such reciprocity increases the current, and is excellent in time of fatigue. There may be various incidents on the path in which a reciprocal current will be especially useful. It is best to reinforce each possibility. (P.187)
How much new health there is in diversity of place and of labor! (P.205)
2. A physician may ask: "If the aura is a physical manifestation, then can it not be grown from without, physically? To a certain extent this will be right.
We have already heard about external blows striking upon the aura. Likewise, there can be created a hothouse atmosphere which heals the aura, but hothouse conditions are the same everywhere and they are not suitable for evolution.
Just as the organism must be developed from within, independent of external conditions, so too with firmness and the purport of the aura grow only from
within.(P.225/226)
10. About manuscripts.
The significance of manuscript has been completely forgotten.
Even the simplest physician understands that infection can be transmitted on a small piece of paper.
Pious kings and most holy cardinals have more than once used this to enhance their prosperity. Likewise, you know the experiments of contemporary hypnotists wherein at a command sealed letters are read. Even in circuses this exhibition is offered without additional charge.
This means that both the outer and inner significance of handwriting is important.
With one rubbing of the hand it is possible to cause little cork figures to leap up. Think how much energy may be impressed upon a sheet of paper through cooperation of the nerve centers.
One can observe the radiation of energy from the fingertips. In darkness these flashings can be seen. When the emanations are especially strong one can see even in daytime a blue light. Together with the radiation there is stratified on the paper an eradicable energy similar in influence to the word and thought.
The writing carries not only the conventional connotation of the words used, but also a powerful communication of the human essence. From this point of understanding, one letter it may be preferable to hold in the hands, reading it over again, while another it is better not to touch at all. Of course, there are flying through the world many empty sheets of paper on which there has not remained a spark of the human consciousness.
How then is the difference to be understood? By spirit-knowledge, by that which decides where one can engage in handclasp.
Handwriting is a handshake at a distance. (P.235/236)
Y. One can identify a recent spirit as compared with an old spirit by noting the difference in striving. A recent spirit does not have the deep perceptions that are inculcated by the experience of many lives, but often it has less egotism and is more adaptable to evolution.
An old spirit sometimes takes on the similitude of a funnel which draws the all-existent "I" into transformation by the personal ego. When such an abscess has formed, the sole cure is through achievement.
Beautiful and brilliant achievement promotes the regeneration of the subtle body. So long as such an old spirit strives for achievement, it still has vital capacity.
Since there is such a thing as gangrene of the body, there is also gangrene of the spirit. A dead limb can be removed in time, but gangrene of the spirit can be removed only by shock.
The spark of the blow gives birth to achievement. Of course, that achievement is preferable which grows consciously, when all one's being knows that the Teacher of Light does exist.
We knew a little girl in whom this knowledge immutably flashed out. Even sickness could not destroy this spirit-knowledge. Its forms were refracted, but the essence remained steadfast.
Thus, extend the essence into Infinity.(P.240/241)
Community
6. Also let us not forget that realization is simplified through clear consciousness. But let us not lose the shortest Path. Time is precious. We should not deprive anyone because of our sluggishness. Laziness and ignorance sleep in the same cradle.
7. Malice admits leprosy and pestilence. Malice can transform a peaceful fireside into a swarm of snakes. Qualities of malice are not befitting the community. The common task is General Welfare.
11. Many falsehoods have been piled around the concept of labor. Only recently was labor scorned and considered harmful for health. What an outrage this is--this regarding of labor as harmful! Not labor is injurious but the ignorant conditions surrounding labor. Only conscious cooperation can render healthy the sacred labor. Not only must the quality of labor be high, but there must be strengthened the mutual desire to make the conditions of labor clearly understood. One must not curse labor, one should set forward the better worker.
23............ On the Earth we are much concerned about the body; therefore it is necessary to penetrate into the origins of illnesses. A physician could say to the patient "You have an attack of cupidity," or "the anemia of self-conceit," or "stones of treachery," or "a rash of gossip," or "a stroke of hatred."
At cemeteries we so love to recall the merits of the departed one; it would not be amiss to set forth the true causes of the diseases--the spectacle would be instructive
Friends, I repeat--hold your thoughts pure, this is the best disinfectant and the foremost tonic expedient.
30.................. The condition of the Earth requires an extraordinary physician. The planet is sick, and if efforts to push it forward do not succeed, then it may be better to remove it temporarily from the chain--it may become as the moon. Hotbeds of the lower strata of the Subtle World have become dangerously intolerable. Also it is impossible to forget how humanity has fallen under the influence of the lower levels of the Subtle World.
The community will help all, but broadening of consciousness will help the community.
48.................. Precisely in the days of grave sickness of the planet it is important to be filled with courage. By groping one does not pass, but the sword can cleave the harmful veils. Very grave is the moment, and it is necessary to intensify all courage.
49. The more anyone renounces, the more he receives. But nations have forgotten how to renounce; even the smallest thinks only how to receive. Meanwhile, the planet is ill and all is sinking in this sickness. And someone wishes to evade the final battle through infection of the whole planet. And some hope to be setting sail in broken fragments, forgetting that the ocean is also departing. It is easy to picture that the planetary body can be just as sick as any other organism and the spirit of the planet is affected by the condition of its body. How to name the illness of the planet? Best of all as a fever from poisoning. Suffocating gasses, from the accumulations of the lower strata of the Subtle World, cut the planet off from the worlds which could send assistance. The Earth's destiny can be ended by a gigantic explosion if the thickness of
the cover be not pierced. A stupendous acceleration is forcing all lines to shake. It could have been expected that acceleration was urgent for a certain country, but it is needed for the whole planet.
57. Is it indeed possible that a tocsin is not heard in each movement of the planet? Is there not an anguished cry in every movement of all beings? Does not a rebellion ring out with each movement of the spirits levelled to the ground in servility?
But have there been better times?
It is better if an abscess be cut open, and it should be possible afterward to close the opening. But first it is needful to draw out the pus; therefore, We do not take halfway measures. We expect broad actions, and at the time of a tocsin it is impossible to think about a piece of yarn.
63. The main understanding will be of the fact that labor can be relaxation. Many amusements will have to be abolished. Chiefly, it must be understood that the products of science and art are for education, not diversion. Many amusements will have to be destroyed as hotbeds of vulgarity. The forefront of culture must sweep away the dens of fools passing time over a mug of beer. Likewise, the use of profanity must find a far more severe penalty. Likewise, manifestations of narrow specialization must be disapproved.
68. Do understand the name of the son of fear and doubt--his name is regret. Indeed, regret after entering upon the Great Service cuts off all the effects of former labors. He who doubts binds a stone to his leg. He who is afraid constrains his breathing. But he who is regretful of his labor in behalf of the Great Service terminates the possibility of approach.
How then not to distinguish that courage which leads to attainment? How not to remember the hand that arrested the dagger of the enemy? How not to gird on the force that gave up all for the growth of the world? Understand, I shall repeat without end, so long as the bridge of the rainbow does not yet encompass all colors.
Cedars preserve a healing tar, but one may smile when the heavenly sap goes into boot grease. Hence, let us guard the principal paths by applying details to useful advantage.
97. On the path do not rest under a rotting tree. In life have no dealings with people with extinguished consciousness. An undeveloped consciousness is not as infectious as an extinguished one. The extinguished consciousness is an actual vampire. It is impossible to fill from without the abyss of the ignorant consciousness. Precisely these people absorb one's energy uselessly. As a result of being with them, enormous fatigue is felt. They must be avoided like a stench in order to bar the way to the fluids of decomposition. It is difficult to distinguish the boundary line between lack of development and extinction. But one quality will be unquestionably indicative Lack of development will or may be accompanied by the palpitation of devotion, but an extinct crater is full of cinders and brimstone. The Teaching does not refuse to expend energy on the undeveloped, but there is a degree of extinction at which the abyss is not to be flooded with a new substance. Only a cataclysm, with its terror of unexpectedness, can melt a congealed lava.
Remember the treasure of the consciousness. Tremor of the substance of the Cosmos manifests the pulsation of the awakened consciousness. Indeed, the rainbow of knowledge flows out of the tremor of the consciousness--a visible stream from an invisible source.
Through all experiences of the past and all attainments of the future, remember about the consciousness.
113. Cupidity is coarse ignorance. Only true cooperation can save from such a malignant mange. A greedy man has a stamp on his face. He is not concerned with the heart; his cup is a bitter one. And for the greedy man the Subtle World is only a source of torment.
121................. A childish materialism proves to be a narcotic for people, but enlightened knowledge will be a ladder of victory.
123. Collectivism and dialectivism are two aids in thinking about materialism. The essence of materialism holds a particular mobility, ignoring not a single manifestation of life. The Teacher reveals only the necessary landmarks. One can develop propositions by thinking along suggested paths. Materialism must be well-grounded, so that all contemporary scientific attainments may enter constructively into the concept of spiritualized materialism.
We have spoken about subtle bodies, about magnets, about the luminosity of the aura, about the radiation of every object, about shifting of sensitivity, about change of ponderance, about the penetrating of stratum of matter through another, about the sendings of thought through space, about the actuality of cementing space, about the feeling of the centers, about understanding the word "matter." Much of that which is invisible but perceptible by apparatus must be appreciated by him who wishes to apply the means of technic in life. It is necessary to replace fanciful drivel with sound reason.
We, the Bearers of the Spirit, have the right to require respect for and recognition of matter.
Friends, matter is not manure but a substance radiant with possibilities. The want of humanity is because of its despising of matter. Sumptuous assembly halls have been built, but hymns to knowledge have not been sung.
131. On quality of advice. Often advice does not achieve its purpose for the reason that it is given as if for oneself. The condition of the brother is not taken into consideration, and the advisor puts himself in the place of the advised. Then the sympathy and pity and solicitude flow about the advisor himself. From such counsels one must of course expect harmful results--not only for the case itself but also in regard to the sufferer. His consciousness is pierced by an alien thinking as if by spikes. These clefts are healed with difficulty, for such counsels may be practically applicable yet their execution demands a quite different aura.
134. Acceptance of the commissions of the community is shown by certain signs. Let us look at sincerity and pity. Sincerity is nothing but the shortest attainment. Vainly do sentimental people load sincerity with romantic tatters. Sincerity is a concept real and invincibly acute. That sincerity is similar to a properly directed spear thrust and is not a diffused goodness can be shown by example. Each doubt lessens the power of the blow. Therefore, for Us sincerity is the shortest attainment. Quite another matter is pity. Pity is a puddle in which the faithful foot may slip. The one who pities descends to the level of the pitied. His force is dissolved in twilight’s of that which he pities--a most whining result.
Pity must not be confused with compassion. In compassion nothing is dissolved, but crystals of action grow. Compassion does not weep, but helps.
142. Rightly has it been observed that the protection and preservation of the offspring of animals must be provided for. Maternity means the same for them as for humanity. When animals are spared they will repay us in milk, wool and labor. The problem of animals living near man is a very important one. One may visualize how the atmosphere is altered when there are friends around the dwelling. Ask the Arab about the horse or a Northerner about the reindeer--he will speak not as about animals but as about his family.
One may pass from animals to plants. You already know that it is beneficial to sleep on cedar roots. You know what collectors of electricity pine needles are. Not only do plants serve salutarily by their extracts, but the plant emanation produces a strong effect on the surroundings. One may see how man can be helped by a bed of flowers consciously combined. Absurd are mixed flower beds whose mutual reactions destroy their good effect. Matched or homogeneous ones can answer the needs of our organism. How many useful combinations there are in fields covered by wild plants! Combinations of plants which are natural neighbors must be studied as instruments of an orchestra. Those scientists are right who look upon plants as subtly sensitive organisms. The next steps will be the study of the reaction of groups of plants on each other as well as upon man. The sensitivity and reciprocal action of plants upon surroundings is indeed astonishing. Plants are manifested, as it were, as a binding substance of the planet, acting on a network of imperceptible interactions. True, the value of plants was long ago foreseen, but group reciprocal actions have not been studied. Until recently people have not understood the vital capacity of vegetable organisms and have senselessly cut clusters of heterogeneous plants, not caring about the meaning of what they were doing. A man with a bouquet is like a child with fire. Exterminators of the vegetation of the planet's crust are like state criminals.
Remember, We do not like cut flowers.
143. You are beginning to do a great deal correctly. You abolish handshaking and thus recognize the potency of contact. You avoid handwriting and thus recognize the stratification of living energy. You abbreviate the language and thus recognize the need of cosmic conservations. You establish Societies of Mutual Aid and thus recognize community. You begin a re-estimate of transitory values and thus recognize evolution. You abolish the usage of compulsion and thus recognize the Teacher. You abolish foul language and thus recognize the value of sound. You abolish vulgar dancing and thus recognize the significance of rhythm. You abolish vulgar shows and thus recognize the power of energy. You abolish tardiness and thus recognize the will. If the scientific significance of your actions is not always clear to you, still in manifesting the inevitability of evolution, you are acting properly.
You see how much We are in agreement with you--only an especially slow-witted person can think about contradiction of ways.
Like healing flowers rise the seedlings of the consciousness of peoples! The channel of the people's striving carries humanity to new knowledge. You may express this affirmation by poetic metaphor or by dry formula, but the meaning of the people's current remains undisturbed. One may wish either to proceed by the difficult way or to apprehend the usefulness of cooperation, but the direction of evolution remains unchangeable.
Thus, regeneration of the world, cooperation, mutual help, and community will flourish.
144. We shall say to him who fears all changes "Dissolution is evident in you." This process begins much earlier than the physical illness. How can one observe the first signs of disintegration? Only in an immobility of admissions. How is it possible to determine when the disintegration becomes dangerous for the social order? When the indolent consciousness considers the community a harmful nonsense. It is best to by-pass such living corpses. Some kinds of people cannot comprise the community, but all those in the category of attacking ones must be indignantly excluded from social intercourse. It must be understood that even the smallest contact with these organisms is harmful. Here there can be no question of kinship. Honored is old age in a body with a clear consciousness; for in the essential nature there is then no old age. But premature decay surrounds one with an intolerable stench.
When Buddha called a man malodorous, he had first of all in mind the spiritual consciousness. This gangrenous process is not subject to cure. In Our structures avoid touching such people. Spending time on them is equal to depriving a waiting, hungry man of a morsel of food.
How eagerly is each word about the New World awaited! The striving of new consciousnesses will result in new combinations. We await those who pronounce the new day a desired one--who regard the best past day worse than each new one. They are right; for each new day is clothed with prana of the new evolution. The air, actually changed by the disintegration of the worlds, becomes new. How necessary it is to study the composition of the atmosphere by the most sensitive apparatuses! The composition of the air is a vital part of biology. Up to the present we have spoken roughly about the air, forgetting its psychic reaction.
148. People do not eat corpses, yet slaughtered animals are eaten. One must ask, "Wherein is the difference--is not a slaughtered animal a corpse?" We advise not to use meat for reasons of simple goalfitness. Indeed, anyone understands that to make use of decomposing cells is harmful. But when does this decomposition begin? At the moment of cessation of the functions of life the body looses its protective radiation and decomposition sets in immediately. Therefore, worldly wisdom about not eating corpses is hypocritical. We recommend farinaceous food, dairy products and vegetables, where there is less decomposition.
True, the life process of plants resembles that of animals, but one can see that the decomposition of plants begins much later. Vegetables are better used either fresh or dried in great heat. It is better us use unleavened bread made without fats. There are enough fatty substances in butter and vegetable oil.
Your term "vegetarianism" is unfortunate; it emphasizes a division according to principle and not according to essence.
In the community food must be vegetable, for the members of the community must follow the utmost goalfitness.
On the path let us not be finicky. Let us not forget the usefulness of resin in all its forms. On the path let us remember that eating twice a day is sufficient. Let us not sit too long at table.
158. Magnetism and gas formations, both dynamic factors, are absolutely not studied. Magnetism attracts attention when a horse is unable to life its shoe from the ground. Gasses are mentioned when people and animals fall dead. Only about such crude manifestations do people talk, but magnetism and gases operate throughout the entire surface of the planet. No place is indifferent, each locality is individual according to qualities of deeply practical significance.
One may be amazed at the naivete of people who settle down in a place without any understanding of its local conditions. One may understand how many possibilities perish and how many calamities could be averted.
You yourselves have performed the experiment with the hazel branch and have been amazed how this most ancient and primitive apparatus became tense, trembled, and went into motion, reacting to underground waters and minerals. Indeed, the source of this obvious reaction lies not in the branch but in the human apparatus. With what detail and fervor must one study, therefore, the reaction of each locality upon man and upon entire groups of people! Many regions are replete with popular rumors about the peculiarities of character of their inhabitants in some places people suffer from goitre; in some they lose their teeth; in some leprosy makes its nest; in some the spleen becomes blighted, or the heart becomes enlarged, or the character sluggish; in some places there is vigor and animation. A great number of such features catch the eye. It may be observed that these peculiarities are not a matter of racial or climatic conditions. The very structure of the ground underfoot may contain the principal causes of the differences in popular characteristics. There is a broad field for study if approached with keen eye and without prejudice.
159. Not only do people not pay attention to the emanations of the earth, they do not take into account the quality of the water used, although they have become accustomed to medicinal treatments with waters. For their protection people have devised the use of boiled water, forgetting that certain water organisms cannot live in boiled water. True, many microbes perish in the boiling, but, on the other hand, upon cooling the boiled water actually absorbs a great quantity of dead particles from the atmosphere.
If you wish to reduce brain receptivity, drink cold boiled water which has been kept for a long time--it communicates to the organism a sluggish staleness.
We teach the use of boiled water only in its fresh, very hot state.
We make use of springs, admitting for purification alum or pumice. Tufa, which is found around geysers, is also useful as a purifier of water. Pure water not only quenches thirst but also ozonizes the whole atmosphere.
We treat wounds by immersion in pure water. Light and water are Our remedies. Our efforts are directed to the simplest expedients. At the formation of new communities, follow simplicity of method in all processes. It is necessary to begin to deal with oratorical blind speech. Take the talkative traveler to the bank of a mountain spring--let him become ashamed!
This morning, imperceptibly, the song of the spring drove away fatigue. This emanation of energy is equal to a strong electrical stimulus.
160. We avoid suggestion except in certain instances when a direct danger can be avoided. It is a different matter when you see an already molded consciousness awaiting a spark from without, but any forcible invasion is condemned. This principle must be affirmed in the community, especially since you know the unlimited effectiveness of the will. When you know that not only people and animals but even objects are moved by the will, then you know that a wave of the will must be directed precisely and circumspectly.
You know that the shifting of objects by the will is not an exaggeration. There is no magic in it; a magnet, rather, will give you the correct way of thinking. Likewise, elder-wood figurines under electricity will provide a visual comparison.
We particularly study the will, which can be sharper than an arrow. It is impossible to guard against these arrows. One could hold out a shield if one knew the precise direction of the arrows. But who can know this direction?
167. It has been said often--"Rest can be found not in sleep but in change of labor." True, some may discontinue sleeping and obtain poor results. As a preliminary it is necessary to teach the nerve centers to work in groups. One must disconnect the work of the centers. One must learn to unite the most unexpected groups and then quickly change their combinations. Thus, a street musician playing several instruments simultaneously performs one of the useful exercises. Dictating to several copyists at the same time is useful. Contrasting movement of the arms is useful. Stoppage of breathing and thinking is useful. One can enumerate a great number of exercises of the will about which it would be fitting to say, "Bees create their hives with patience."
168. Express your wishes cautiously. Every one knows many parables and fairy tales which describe the ugly consequences of careless wishes. Remember about the rajah who wished to receive a beautiful palace, and did receive it, but who, on entering it, thought about an attacking tiger, which then appeared and tore him to pieces. Under the symbols of allegories there is much reality. If people would realize the power of the will, many manifestations would receive a practical explanation. Indeed, not a forcible tension of the will but the dynamic quality of concordance of the centers produces the effect of fulfillment. Hence, an oft-repeated desire, like a blunt blade, does not cleave space. Whereas, the ringing of unexpected concordance breaks the densest surface.
Tales about sorcerers sending deadly diseases are not fictions, but there is no sorcery in them--merely exercise of the will. The weakest hypnotist can compel one to experience the effect of drowning. He can even order one to die on a definite date. Such cases have been recorded.
Now, imagine the will brought up in favorable conditions and you will readily agree that the "deadly eye" of the East has a basis.
One can have no doubt in the potency of the will, but it is another matter to determine its power in life. How to find and discern the conditions under which a desire can pierce the being identified by our will? It is particularly necessary to watch the sparks of ourconsciousness. Even when a body is almost invisible the lightning of thought nevertheless flashes, and on the point of this lightning is life and death.
There was a certain ruler who said to some criminals "You cannot live more than a day," and at night they were found lifeless. The responsibility for such sendings is great. And each hour we send arrows in all directions.
Be careful in expressing wishes.
169. During treatment of illnesses through a command of the will, remember that one must not try to overcome infectious diseases by suggestion. A common error is the lack of knowledge of how to discern the circle of possible effect. Furthermore, the treatment of infectious diseases by suggestion may work irreparable harm. It is better not to touch a dog guarding the gateway; if one begins to whip it, its rage will increase tenfold. Likewise with microbes, they can be vanquished by rays or by the counteraction of the forces of the organism, but the whip of the will forces many centers to droop, and the fire will engulf new domains. Rays undercut the roots of the infection, but the will leads it to new activity.
Indeed, it is difficult to diagnose a disease in its embryonic state; only examination of the secretions and a picture of the radiations will give determinative results. If the secretions can sometimes lead into error about the true cause, then the hieroglyphics of radiation will reveal the basis of the disease. Each peculiarity of the action of the organism gives a color and sign on the graph. Observations can be carried on in every hospital.
170. We have spoken about conditions and about distinctions. Naturally, the question arises--what is usual and what unusual? We regard everything as being usual. In the conception of a man of small consciousness a great deal is unusual. The usual and the unusual are divided only according to the degree of consciousness. It is truer to say--absorbed and unabsorbed, realized and unrealized. With Us the unusual is understood differently. Each type of consciousness has its usual grouping of the centers, just as you distinguish types of thinking as mathematical or philosophical. From the circles of consciousness often stands out a grouping of centers not native to any of them. These branchings of consciousness are truly unusual indeed, they give their possessor many possibilities but little earthly happiness. And rarely can the possessor himself point out the symptoms of these branchings of the consciousness. The unusual feature is drowned in the routine of the consciousness. Even an experienced psychologist will find with difficulty these unexpected blossoms.
While diseases are clearly reflected upon the radiation, the unusual branchings of the consciousness are formulated with difficulty. True, radiations give the complete picture of a man, but everything psychically unrealized gives a wavering outline, difficult to fix. Here is the domain of the unusual for a certain group of consciousness, and such blossoms among stones are particularly precious.
Reflect upon psychosis, reflect upon criminality, reflect upon unbalancedness!
192. The development of the power of observation will permit due attention to surrounding conditions. Anyone will understand that if the walls of your room were covered with an arsenic substance or with a preparation of sulphur, or of resin, or mercury, or musk, then such coverings would have an influence on the condition of the organism--this is a crude example. But now ask your biochemists and technologists what influence the material of dwellings has on the physical and psychic foundation. What is the difference between a house of brick and one of basalt, or between one of granite and one of marble, between an iron and a wooden one, between an oak and a pine one? To what kinds of organisms is an iron bed suitable and to what kinds a wooden one. Who needs a woolen carpet and who a wooden floor? About many conditions technology will be as uninformed as was the cave age. And yet, who would not agree that wood and minerals have an important medicinal significance? It means that essential analysis is at a standstill in the absence of observation. Investigation has gone along a channel of usualness, and for overzealous investigators somewhere a bonfire is already prepared.
You may be sure that the spirit of the inquisition is still not very far away; the difference will be in the garb and in the means of eradicating new quests.
195. Write down about psychic infection. It is an old theme, yet up to now unapplied in life. As before, people fear physical infection even to excess, forgetting the main channel of all infections. Is it possible to keep on killing, cursing and raging without spatial stratifications resulting? All is precipitated solidly and heavily, creating above the site of an event a shroud similar to harmful gases. Can it be expected that the poisonous radiations of malignant energy will be dispersed? On the contrary, they will become condensed and will affect the prana. Never settle on bloody places.
New works must be on a new place.
253. Indeed, imagination is only reflection. From nothing, nothing is born. It is difficult to imagine the indestructibility in space. An evident destruction of complete manifestations penetrates the brain. The destruction of whole epochs appears obvious. How to understand the reality of the densification of space? Many symptoms are before the eyes, yet people do not know how to correlate what is taking place. Let us take an example it is already known that psychic energy can imperatively ask humanity for admittance. Already noticed is the manifestation of strange illnesses in which vital energy flows away without visible causes. But here the cause and effect are not correlated.
Thus, a case known to you could have taught you how necessary is the study and application of psychic energy. A wave of psychic energy would have restored vitality and bestowed a new joy of being. But for this it is needful to be conscious of psychic energy, that is, to enter into the rhythm of evolution. Instead of that, the sick are stuffed with mixtures and potions. There where help would be easy they begin to prepare submissively for death.
When We summon to the realization of psychic energy, We are not thinking of turning people into magicians; We are only indicating the next step of evolution and urging in the name of the community not to let the date slip by. Hasten to supply yourselves with strength and thus assist the proximate evolution.
Certainly evolution will take place, but why be crushed when a song of joy has been ordained!
257. The manifestation of diseases may be understood as pricks of pan-human substance. It is clearly evident that people of developed consciousness are often ill. Headache, ailments of the eyes, teeth, extremities, are referable to the psychic domains. You heard this long ago. Cancer, tuberculosis, diseases of liver and spleen, as well as enlargement of the heart--all these result from an unbalanced state of the psychic centers. Only the application of psychic energy can shield the better people. Otherwise, like sponges they will absorb the excess ills of humanity.
Not without reason do We insist upon realization of psychic energy--the time has come!
264.............Amid the monotony of conventionalities only a few sense the reality of Cosmos. Among these scrolls of births, sicknesses, sorrows and deaths few will find the scroll of the path without end and without beginning. How to tell the hungry one about eternity? Based upon present experience, he will imagine eternal hunger. Who then, and where, is he who first breaking bread will lead to eternity? Bread of the Earth and Knowledge are manifested only in cooperation.
New coworkers, does joy glow within you when you think about the community?
Signs Of Agni Yoga, 1929
4. Regarding simple words for simple people, one should remember that simple people need small doses of medicine. There is the identical law--as above, so below. Therefore simple people are the best disseminators.
5. The inflation of the blood vessels is characteristic of the growth of consciousness, and by technical means this process must be protected from the effect of the sun's pressure upon the solar plexus.
Let us not forget how the priestesses of antiquity were shielded from the sun. They wore breastplates of lithium, covered with wax, the melting of which indicated the danger line of temperature.
Besides immersing the hands in water, immersing of the feet is permitted. Cold baths may be as harmful as the sun's rays.
15. The poison resulting from irritability is called "imperil," which commands danger. This poison, a quite substantial one, is precipitated against the walls of the nerve channels and thus spread through the entire organism.
If modern science would try impartially to examine the nerve channels, giving heed to the astral currents, it would encounter a strange decomposition of the astral substance during its passage through the nerve channels--this is the reaction to "imperil." Only rest can help the nervous system to overcome the dangerous enemy which can call forth the most diverse irritations and painful contractions of the organism.
He who is afflicted with "imperil" must repeat, "How beautiful is everything!" And he will be right; because the flow of evolution is rational, in other words, beautiful. The more subtle the nervous system, the more painful is the precipitation of "imperil." This same poison, by the addition of one ingredient, may contribute to the dissolution of matter.
23. What has forced the poisons toward the earthly spheres? The occurrences of disruption of the elements give rise to a powerful poisonous gas. Usually this gas is easily assimilated in space, but the chemical rays of the sun are driving the gaseous waves into the layers near to the planet. A dangerous reaction results, but those forewarned can overcome the poison. Irritation and its offspring, "imperil," combine easily with the poison of space, which is called "aeroperil." The laws are alike in all things.
The Teacher sometimes wears a mask against the gas. Of course the action of the poison is not always the same. But sensitive apparatuses are responsive. Cold considerably minimizes the action of the gases.
31. It is necessary to distinguish between indignation of spirit and irritation. The fire of irritation must be divided into two kinds. When irritation has an impersonal cosmic character, its poison may be removed by a current of prana. But if conceit or self-pity intensify the irritation, then the sediment of poison will be precipitated upon the centers. Then there is no means to eject it; one may only wear it away by cosmic perception.
Quality of thinking must be realized as healing. The quality of gratitude is likewise the finest purification of the organism. He who has found the seed and realized the care of theSender can project gratitude into space. Great is the healing power of the emission of gratitude. One must transform everything abstract into reality.
34. Striving, during the growth of consciousness, is focused precisely in the center of the solar plexus. Should striving trespass its proper limits, then the so-called fiery death is unpreventable. An uncultivated consciousness can bear the effects of striving, but further ascent demands that the treasure be placed temporarily within a guarded casket.
Each thought precipitates its sediments upon the walls of the channels of the nervous system. The more perfect the striving the more phosphorous the sediments. Then the only place sufficiently guarded for that fuel is the solar plexus, which gradually imbibes the sediments from the auxiliary channels. Sometimes such an absorption can be so vigorous as to cause starlike painful sensations. Then the Teacher must apply a cooling ray, which aids in drawing the sediments from the extremities to the center. All this is a process of the growth of consciousness. By triennial steps one can trace the sharpening of receptivity. This stage demands preservation of the casket for the next fortunate expenditure.
Let us guard the law of life that leads along the ladder of beauty and happiness.
38. Let him who desires to approach cooperation show understanding. Say to the physician, "One can show resourcefulness in applying musk, valerian and cedar tar. One can demonstrate observation in describing the flow of life. One can show steadfastness in striving to the Teacher, without doubt and without prejudices."
Through the evidences of life one can demonstrate the quality of attainments. And we shall value each measure of attainment. Each hour may bring its new inalienable possibility. Evident privilege may be received through evident manifestation--thus, lawfully are laid the achievements.
39. It is erroneous to believe that it is easy to lose something on Earth. It is even more difficult to find. The definition of a loss presumes something acquired. All that is acquired will drag behind him who acquired. At times it is impossible to be rid of material and abstract possessions. Therefore We advise acceptance of possessions with full responsibility for them. Thence emanates the lofty quality of objects and thoughts. To drag along tattered survivals is burdensome.
How to cleanse away the ulcers of thought of cowardice and treason? One cannot heal the aura with cedar tar. One must burn away the ulcers with the flame of shock, and must find courage to endure the pain. But how shall courage arise from cowardice? Terror shakes the coward, but for Us terror is entirely inadmissible.
You who amass acquisitions--consider their quality.
41. The bridges crossed between the steps of the expanding consciousness exist beyond current occurrences. It is erroneous to await some external constellations; the work of the serpent of the solar plexus flows independently. Only special response to the atmospheric conditions accompanies this inner work. The density of the surrounding atmosphere complicates the work of the nervous system. Therefore calmness is needed as a remedial condition.
42. One should distinguish three groups of medicines--life-givers, preservers, and restorers. Let us leave for our enemies the fourth group--the destroyers. Let us first turn to the life-givers, because they act first of all upon the nervous system. The nerve centers and secretions of the glands indicate the future trend of medicine. Through these domains humanity will discover the finest energy, which for simplification we still call spirit. The discovery of the emanations of this energy will be the next step in the development of culture.
Metalization in the cultivation of plants will yield useful secretions of the roots. Therefore it is necessary once again to direct attention to the vegetable kingdom. Besides, observe the nourishing properties of vegetables and grains and you will have many surprises. The lack of discrimination in the choice of man's nourishment is astonishing. I speak of the quality.
56. It is fitting to realize the danger of the forced waves in the lower layers of our atmosphere. A one-sided consciousness can effect an unheard-of cataclysm. The collision of waves of sound and light can set up grave brain disturbances.
Whither may one direct one's consciousness? Verily to the reality of Infinity. It means that it is time to pass from the coarse layers of matter to research into the most subtle energy.
61. You think correctly about the manifold reactions of human emanations upon their surroundings. A convincing example is to be found in the effect of a human being upon animals and plants. Give a man an animal or plant and you can notice the change in their condition, revealing the type of man who is a destroyer of life energy. Like a vampire, the rider may exhaust a horse; or the hunter a dog; or the gardener a plant. Seek the cause of this in the emanations of the man.
Observe and record the history of the sickness of the spirit. The roots of that which is physically apparent are concealed in remote accumulation. I advise to be cold to people with unhealthy emanations. The treatment with coldness will strengthen them sooner. Do not regard this frigid therapy as cruelty, because We bid you to open the door sensitively to all who knock.
63. If you notice repetitions in the Teaching, it means that new details may be found, or that a command not yet fully applied in life must be stressed.
One should remember that the usefulness of the application of prana can be extended over an entire collective. Not only can one apply prana for one's own use but by means of psychic energy one can transmit a part of his store to others.
In remote times a sick body was surrounded by healthy ones in order to nurture its strength. But such vampirism should not even be suggested. Of quite another significance is conscious transmission, voluntary and benevolent, not only to one person but even to several at once if one understands how to apportion the transmissions judiciously. An important result is effected when material benefit is transmitted by means of psychic energy. Ponderable substance is transmitted through imponderable energy. This is not suggestion but a concrete sending.
73. You know that at an altitude of 11,000 feet the astral body acquires a special quality. Likewise, each altitude has a significance for each body. You may have observed that at an altitude of 7,000 feet man can decrease the amount of his food, and this necessity gradually lessens until at an altitude of 16,000 feet it shows a substantial difference. Beyond an altitude of 9,000 feet I do not advise the use of wine, coffee, pepper and other spices. Above 17,000 feet even strong tea is inadvisable. With the decreasing need of food there is a parallel decrease in the need of sleep; one can consider not over six hours, and at 20,000 feet not more than four is required. Thus one can understand that at great altitudes one can remain almost without sleep, and the matter of food requires different considerations.
It is not permissible to take valerian--indicated to you--with spices. Certainly, at high altitudes it is injurious to consume the same quantity of food as at low levels. The mountains are significant, since they free one from the lower conditions of Earth. On the heights one may feel that one has emerged from the customary earthly demands. Certainly, if, even for the astral body an altitude of 11,000 feet is significant, then each added 1,000 feet elevates the physical body into special conditions. It would be an irreparable error to try artificially to adjust the conditions on mountains to our habits of Earth. Remember and apply.
94. Some may be unable to reconcile the existence of equality and the Hierarchy. Equality is contained in the potentiality of spirit. Hierarchy holds the irreplaceability of tested cumulations. Therefore it is just to say that a complex of knowledge will be the gate to the Hierarchy. Mark the expression "complex," because one specialty could not define the scope of a Hierarch.
Contemplating knowledge, gain the realization of the Teacher. Verily, reverence of the Teacher is the panacea even for physical ailments.
There is greater difficulty during the condition of the open centers, when each breath of the old world carries infection and only the breeze of the true evolution can restore health. Therefore do not sheathe yourself in the old world, and attract the young ones to the joy of the New World. In all there is joyous, stern goal-fitness.
166. Everyone has aligned himself with some type of Yoga, even if only in an elementary stage or in a distorted form. People may be classified according to the elements, and one may also divide them according to Yogas. Often in a bigot you find the perversion of Bhakti Yoga; in an unbearable athlete, Hatha Yoga; in a zealot, Raja Yoga; and in a hypocrite, Jnana Yoga. But what surpasses the contribution of the true Yoga, which links the earthly consciousness with the cosmic pulse? Can one imagine anything that could replace the fundamental striving of the incarnate spirit; something that could imbue with the astral understanding; something that would justify the existence of mankind? But the study of Agni Yoga brings man closer to the far-off worlds.
You may ask Me what physical exercises are useful in Agni Yoga. I advise short pranayama in the morning, no longer than five minutes. One should abstain from meat, except smoked meats. Vegetables, fruit, milk, and cereals are always acceptable. All wines are also barred, except for curative purposes. Opium is the enemy of Agni Yoga. The clouds in the sky weigh upon an Agni Yogi. I advise to insulate the footwear with rubber and to walk in the morning, avoiding smoke. With valor must the various communications of life be received. Since it is impossible otherwise to decide where is the good and where is the bad. He who transmits into life the true Yoga fulfils his great mission. Thus, before us is the foundation of Agni Yoga.
167. Some may ask, "Is it easy for those who bring Truth?" Of course the path for each one who transmits it is hard. His flaming path can never be facilitated. It is as if a dome descends upon the head of the bearer of Truth and weighs down the centers of the brain. Only conscious battle leads the toiler in the spiritual realm to the fulfillment of his task. The fog of wrath will trail him because he brings the planet out of its isolation.
Can one call him fearless who pronounces himself fearless, or can one call him learned who proclaims himself as having acquired knowledge? Verily, each one worthy of attainment manifests his works, pronouncing them neither good nor bad, but performing them just as he must. Thus is the way laid for the completion of incarnation. Will he who completed his way call it burdensome? The sight of the last step fills the traveler with joy, because he knows Whom he approaches.
168. Can a man ascend and descend for his own sake? Verily, no being can act without influencing his surroundings. Not only does he stir up the various layers of atmosphere with each action but he literally drags his near ones with him. Hence, man must realize his responsibility toward the universe. A man rising in his understanding shows through this a substantial aid to someone. A man falls in spirit and thereby perhaps kills someone. Outside of conscious thought flows the constant unconscious cooperation, embracing wide circles dependent upon the law of karma and the aura.
It is not easy to decide when one is a murderer or a benefactor. Only the lights of Agni Yoga can in justice illumine the work of our chaotic thought. But for this one must consecrate oneself in sacrifice to Agni Yoga; and few like the dangers of self-sacrifice. Therefore, what is said is comprehensible to only a few. But one can cite numerous examples, such as how a man who became insane in Asia was the cause of the ruin of a man in Europe, or how a man who rose in spirit in America healed another in Egypt. Hence the efflorescence of beneficent thoughts is a flaming flower of spirit.
172. The yogi must keep pure his organs of respiration. Therefore hot milk, valerian, and mint are prescribed for him. The yogi must keep pure his stomach and his bowels, for which licorice and Alexandrian senna are prescribed. The yogi must keep pure his lungs, and for this he is given aloe, and also tar, prudently applied. The yogi must keep pure the all-pervading Soma, for which he must make use of musk. By purity is also meant the vitality of the glands.
186. For an Agni Yogi, carpentry, blacksmithery, and laundry are harmful. One must be prepared to withstand the battles of space. One must also understand to what an extent the fire, called to life, refines the organism. I, the Hierarch, have justly decreed that the achievement of transmitting the new Yoga is superior to all other missions.
192. A yogi is under continual tests by his Teacher. Similarly a yogi tests those who approach him.
Explain the meaning of the tests of cold and hunger and all other measures. An ignorant man will be perplexed about how the sensations of cold or hunger can be dispelled. But he who understands the essence of things knows that the sensations do not disappear, but the condition of the spirit may be such that nothing can unsettle it. A hungry one will find means of satiation if his spirit has not reached an animal condition. A cold one can warm himself inasmuch as his spirit understands why he must fortify himself. Otherwise there will remain only animal irritation, the obscuration of consciousness, and downfall.
It is correct to add that flexibility is the best escape from the trap of life. A yogi appraises instantaneously the value of goal-fitness. If in order to expose his yogism he is offered a piece of meat, he would of course prefer to eat the meat than disclose his secret. The effect of the meat can be easily purged, but the effect of the secret in treacherous hands is irreparable. And sometimes it is necessary to project a smiting ray, which is only rarely permissible.
I also wish to remind you of the importance of creative work for Agni Yoga. You were bidden to analyze two musical compositions differently interpreted, and the spirit understood in what lay the difference of effect. Thus is consciousness raised by the touch of Truth. One more abstraction will become for us a reality. And how beautiful is the realization of constant trial! Therein lies motion. Can a Yogi of Fire succumb to inertness?
I do not say this for your ears, but for application.
194. A yogi should understand atmospheric conditions for their application to action. Thus, even an ignorant observer can clearly see that electric waves may substantially alter a usual order of effect. Thus, even magnetic gales and the settlings of humidity will produce various psychic results. Magnetic whirlwinds and all electrophorous manifestations are Our friends, but atmospheric precipitations disturb the current of fire. We use an atmosphere charged with electricity to convey even to an unprepared man the usefulness of concepts hitherto unsuspected by him.
The moment of exit of the astral body is also helped by magnetic waves. Therefore a yogi needs sensitiveness to all the intangible performances of nature. For this the yogi needs, primarily, contact with prana. To effect this, the window should not be closed, except perhaps when the humidity is very dense. Useful are long baths or warm baths, without abrupt movements. Altogether, abrupt movements disturb the motion of the aura and We avoid them. A speedy rhythm does not disrupt the unity with the atmosphere, but convulsive movements wound the aura like needles.
Many observations can facilitate the structure of the future. But to effect this one must realize that even mosquitoes know atmospheric conditions better than men. Yet people think that, having the title of king of nature, they have the right to know nothing.
196. You know about the harmful effect of various fuels. Therefore one should pay attention to the construction of fireplaces. In any case it is best not to remain long near a hearth, knowing what manner of guests the emanations of food, especially bloody foods, attract. Therefore it is better to have cold smoked meat and poultry.
With equal caution one must guard the purity of the air in the sleeping room. One should remember that during the departure of the astral body the physical body remains unprotected, and if the air is poisoned the appearance of guests is unavoidable. Mint is the best disinfectant, also aiding the astral body, because the latter leaves the physical body oftener than we think, though with varied purposes. Either it wanders aimlessly about, not far from the physical body, or it may acquire much that is useful. The imperative duty of each one is to create the best conditions for his astral body.
Also, one should take care that no dirty water remain in the house. Indoor fountains and aquariums are usually undesirable nurseries. Why torture fish and birds in prisons?
I also wish you to preserve one room in absolute purity, or even a corner, dedicated to the Teacher. One may retain near the window an armchair in which no one may sit. Also, do not admit the curious. For such, one should be most average, so that their brazenness should skim by the aura. These are all counsels for the strengthening of the Yoga.
201. There exists the false impression that a yogi possesses unfailing health in the usual sense. But can one fashion a sensitive instrument out of a log? Does not the value of the strings of the vina lie in their response to the finest intervals of tone? Equally resonant is the sensitive apparatus of the yogi. Indeed, to him alone are known the indescribable fleeting pains which, like the tuning of the strings of the vina, transform his being.
One can understand that We shall not stress any lack of danger on the path of Yoga. How can one avoid pain during the regeneration of the centers? The fire of cognition remains burning hot.
You know by now that what is said is not abstract symbology. All the usual nomenclature for these pains is useless, so long as science will not hasten to understand the significance of psychic energy or spirituality. The farther removed is the understanding from the danger of Yoga, the farther is man from unity with the Highest Consciousness. For this, casual flights of consciousness are not valuable. What is needed is the incessant song of soaring. The vina does not always ring out, but its intonation is always harmonious.
Those who seek Yoga for robust health had better partake of a glass of wine and discuss lofty ideas without applying them to life. For the health of a yogi flutters like the wings of a soaring eagle. The eye of the yogi sees like the eagle eye, which you know. The calm of the yogi is like the tension of an ocean wave.
206. You have received the signs of Yoga on the heights. You became convinced that neither the cold nor the altitude injured your health. How then can he who has not conquered the cold endure the supreme tremor? How can one contemplate the far-off worlds when fearing even the heights of Earth? How can one imagine himself a freed spirit if the passing sensation of hunger is not conquered? A burdened stomach is the sign of the cessation of ascent. A certain amount of submersion in earthly life is necessary. But then the Yoga provides many advantages besides cosmic consciousness. Yoga provides a current of space and Our aid in all useful actions. The knowledge of cooperation gives the only true approach. It is the more important to understand the Yoga in its practical application, in order to afford Us the possibility of responding practically.
214. The crystal of Materia Lucida can be shown only rarely in such magnitude as has been visible to you. For this, there is needed a special converging of magnetic currents. The crystal appears, as it were, to be attracted by the Stone. It sharpens the center of the third eye, and is also manifested as the material of astral construction on the highest plane. It pertains to the finest energies and will be an ingredient in the formula of energy promised to humanity if humanity desires to accept it. This light can be intensified to infinity, and will provide illumination which does not require the expenditure of any material and can assume any form. This problem may be solved, but the desire of humanity is necessary. Otherwise access to the current of finest energies cannot be given. The forces of these energies are linked with psychic energy; hence each abuse is destructive.
It should be remembered that not only for illumination but also for healing is Materia Lucida irreplaceable. It will be the best remedy for calming the nerves, for it affords a bridge between the psychic energy of humanity and cosmic energy, the reservoir of which is inexhaustible.
220. Agni Yoga is not only a progressive development of human possibilities; it should effect the combination with the cosmic energies which reach our planet at a prescribed period. This fact must be understood with surety. Otherwise a seeming succession of sickness will spread, and their treatment by external measures will bring on the most disastrous results.
How can one be cured of this manifestation of fires? They can only be utilized as a useful psychically active force. How can one cure pains in the spine if they are correlated with the awakening of the Kundalini? He who knows will welcome and aid it by rubbing in mint. How can we stop the burning of the third eye if it begins to function? Is it not more rational to help its development, shielding it from the sun? Long ago people knotted their hair on the crowns of their heads, in order to protect this channel. Can one stop the functioning of the solar plexus if it begins to rotate? Each outrage of the solar serpent may culminate in injury to the brain. Equally dangerous is an interruption of the functioning of the center of the Chalice. Of course, poisoning by opium intercepts the movement of the centers; but, then, decapitation would be simpler!
One may realize what consternation will be provoked by these inexplicable movements of the centers if we do not approach them through the channel of psychic energy. Strangely enough, study of the physical traces of "imperil" may compel the understanding of the precipitations of psychic energy. One can observe the traces of "imperil " in any nerve channel. But it can be remarked that around the granulations of this poison is gathered some sort of substance which absorbs this virulent viper. The precipitates of psychic energy will be discovered, because each energy has its physical crystal.
Whoever has seen the crystals of Fohat and Materia Lucida knows how visible are the crystals of even the most subtle energies. The combining of the physical plane of energies with the invisible saturation of space will be the true direction of study. The way of the metaphysicist has not effected evident results. The alchemist is reposing in his coffin. But chemistry will disclose the tangible reality if it finds the true understanding of psychic energy and all-binding fire.
I consider it necessary to provide the possibility, but freedom of the will must not be violated. Whosoever wishes will understand! Never give an all-exhaustive formula. Permit place for the free will.
221. The precipitate of "imperil" has been shown to you. Precisely that poison gives so much anxiety to people. Do not forget that the grossest ignorance is not equal to a drop of "imperil." For "imperil" is not a personal product; evaporating, it permeates space, for the purity of which we are all responsible.
227. Each cosmic attainment contains the possibility of danger through incaution. If people can master new energies, then the peril of obsession will increase for the weak in spirit.
The problem of obsession should be regarded scientifically. Two phases of existence are established. First--continuity of life in different states. Second--the influence of the will of one being upon another. Thus, beings existing in the subtle bodies of different grades may superimpose their thoughts on those incarnate on Earth. The unrealized energy can aid in the unity of the worlds, but uniting the highest, it also opens the path to the lowest. Besides, you already know to what an extent the lower spirits try to attach themselves to earthly emanations. Therefore, one should warn people about the steadfastness of the will, because obsession is one of the most inadmissible conditions. Only the intervention of a third will, firm and pure, can terminate this lawlessness, which affects people without regard for age or position.
It is the physician's duty to watch the sick for symptoms of an alien will. If the physician is himself sufficiently pure and unafraid of calling to himself the unbidden guest, he may apply the action of will. But even the departure of the obsessor is insufficient for a cure; because for a thousand days the danger of relapse is not precluded, and the ailing one must watch his thoughts sharply. One should warn physicians.
Countless is the number of those who desire to influence people with the most degraded thoughts. But in order to save a man it is sufficient to have power and to find the rhythm of command. The duty of the yogi consists in the ejection of harmful influences.
228. Open centers provide an evolutionary cosmic channel, but mediums are like rudderless boats. All humanity must pass through evolutionary channels toward perfection. But the closed centers sweep it far behind. Open centers are the indication of a correct direction, but mediumship indicates only danger. A medium is but an inn for disembodied liars.
230. It is necessary to study attentively the cases of so-called dual existence. At its worst, it is a type of obsession. At its best, a survival from former incarnations. Sometimes the spirit approaches his former incarnations to such an extent that he relives them. It is necessary to observe solicitously this condition, which does not enter into the consciousness of the present incarnation. One should not trouble him with questioning. But here, also, the yogi can be useful. He can give the command not to touch the past. You notice that We touch upon past incarnations only in cases of necessity, in order not to evoke the emanations of the past from Akasa.
235. It is justly observed that certain pains are called sacred. Through them the spirit ascends, and there is no other way. We do not know an instance when consciousness was able to ascend without bodily pains. One should understand how attentively it is necessary to consider every manifestation when with each hour we may expect a transmittal of the highest energies.
241. Can a yogi feel fatigue? Of course he can; he can even become ill. But he will know that a new store of energy must be gathered. He will know where energy was overspent and will calmly take valerian and musk.
It is a joy to know that our apparatus needs restoration of energy. The fatigue from the past is happiness for the future. The new reinforcement of energy is always an advance over the past. This means that fatigue is our friend. In knowledge of this the wise serpent changes his skin; but the serpent does not sting during the new growth. The serpent knows that the success of this regeneration depends on rest. Therefore, the man who knows the cause of fatigue will wisely prescribe rest for himself, summoning to the work completely different centers.
302. One should observe certain precautions in Agni Yoga. Beyond a certain step one may notice pains in the back. One should then not bend down, because the pillar of energy rises like quicksilver in a thermometer. Therefore a straight position of the spine is advised. Similarly inadvisable is work that demands a sideways position such as wood-cutting. The flame is vertical in its structure. Thus will each fire act. The assertion of slight precautions will not detach people from life. One can quite unnoticeably introduce into life a method of action that is harmless.
323. How to begin Agni Yoga? Primarily, one must realize the presence of psychic energy. Then it is necessary to realize that fire creates the essence of the spirit. Of course, abstinence from meat is useful. Vegetables are advisable, excepting a few, such as asparagus, celery, and garlic, which are medicinal. Likewise, one must take precautions against the fiery sickness. The first remedy in this regard will be the cognition and mastery of psychic energy. But, as external purification, one may apply the essence of moru , or, as it is called, balu. When you are asked to give an exact formula, indicate moru as the primary remedy, to be dissolved in the water of ablution. One can prepare a powerful essence from the juice of the leaves and roots. If the first formula is judiciously applied, one can give the next one. The same plant may also be taken internally with milk. But first investigate it externally.
Also, do not disdain to affirm that valerian can be a powerful guardian amidst the flame. Think about psychic energy as simply as possible, since the fine energies are not manifested in thunder. They penetrate the remote layers of the atmosphere and, therefore, their symptoms are especially subtle.
329. The sickness called neuritis has a certain relation to fire. Also much that is ascribed to rheumatism and nervous disturbances should be ascribed to fire. These pains can be easily gotten rid of by establishing the materiality of psychic energy. When these sediments obstruct the nerve channels all manner of painful developments can be expected. Like stones in the inner organs, the crystals of psychic energy may be injurious if the energy is not utilized. Especially dangerous is the conflict of the crystals of psychic energy with the sediments of "imperil." Often organisms nervously developed are sickly. Therefore experimental investigation of psychic energy is so needed. That which is subject to physical measurements is easily accepted.
330. Observe the symptoms of incomprehensible ailments. Observe around which centers the symptoms and pains appear. Perhaps there is aching of the shoulders or elbows or knees. Perhaps three signs appear near the center of the Chalice, or burning occurs in the larynx. Each such symptom points to the activity of that center. Like an open book is inscribed the personality of a man. Above his head burns the constant mark of his essence. One can read it even with plain observation. But people are accustomed to crude reactions. They await deafening thunder and blinding lightning. But they themselves perform the most important actions in silence.
Just as a powerful magnetic current is apparently sensed only by certain bodies, but acts upon everything, so the most penetrating energies are invisible. But as yet We beg that attention be paid to the evident manifestations.
Comparing the character of people with the external painful sensations, one can arrive at valuable conclusions. We should know how the centers influence the surrounding organs. Why is tuberculosis attributed to cold or to anemia, when the centers lying near the lungs indicate certain characteristics of the organism? Why is swelling of the shoulders and elbows taken for rheumatism when the centers of the shoulders show tension? Our task is not to violate by ready formulas, but to direct one in time along the path of the current of the universal law.
348. It can be understood that meat is not desirable for the organism after the full realization of the full harm of bringing dead tissue into the organism. One may permit certain smoked meats only in travel. But in general, I advise abstinence. It is useful to have apples on the table. The essence of this fruit is useful for inhalation, until they rot.
371........
Only recently the experiment upon the soma of the organism began. Also recently the purple defensive auric net was remembered. Both manifestations are related to the domain of Fire. The first represents the result of the work of phosphorus. The second gives the power of fire which is attracted out of space by a healthy emanation of the organism. Thus, one should safeguard the fire of the body, that its effect may be powerful. Our medicines are directed toward these fires. Not the muscles, but the fiery wave of nerves merits attention. It must be restored and nurtured.
The plant brought by you from the mountains will afford various useful experiments. The tense energy of the sap nurtures the power of fire. But one should also study other means of applying it. The warmth connected with the essence of the leaves and the oil of the bark will produce the best strengthening remedy for the defensive auric net.
Between the two Origins of Light and Darkness the defensive auric net shines like armor. Verily this line is the boundary of Light and Darkness! From a different angle we shall approach the Golden Mean of the Ordainment of Buddha. A line divides the Origins. Like lightning, it emanates from the one principle of the Primary Source. As a defense and as a bridge, fire unites the opposites. How people should value the power of union! Whoever possesses it is the conqueror of Darkness.
Physicians should study the significance of soma and of the defensive auric
net.
---------------------------------------
* Soma: Note that soma is not the ethereal body. Soma is a subtle secretion of the glands which can create a sort of protective net for the centers. Therefore, with such protection the transmutation of the centers may be continued, as the insulation of the centers makes this transmutation less dangerous. Even under the snow some plants live and grow. Some
times the most wonderful plants develop under the pure snow. Thus, soma offers protection against fire. Letters of Helena Roerich, Vol. I, p. 258
------------------------------------
379. The covering and the soma of the glands permit access to fire, therefore the sensitiveness of the glands is beneficial.
382. The stream of life produces a continuous influx of energy. When the receptive centers are open, nothing can prevent a new influx.
Neither age nor illness, but prejudices sever the threads of happiness. Personal irritation is the daughter of prejudice. One cannot free oneself from irritation without uprooting prejudices. Let continued striving help in justly estimating manifestations. Not renunciation, but an evaluation of life is needed. One's pledge, like a sword of justice, should set apart the correct attitude.
The books of the Teaching should be reread, because each day affords new application.
383. In the achievements of the future, special attention must be paid to the coordination of the development of the spirit and the bodily condition. The body has difficulty in overtaking the spirit; attacks of anguish occur when the spirit is raised to heights.
There is another circumstance which is of no less importance, and for this reason I have asked you to abstain from pronouncing personal names as far as possible. People addressing themselves to someone at a distance impose a sense of burden upon the person if his spirit is sufficiently sensitive. You have noticed how the yogis often change their abodes and avoid pronouncing names. This results from a knowledge of the effect produced in space by names, when they are sent with some knowledge of the Teaching.
Only in pressing cases should one exert one's will upon living beings. And it must be understood that the growth of spirit reflects on the body; by overburdening the spirit we cause a bodily reaction. He who rises in spirit should be guarded; but in such cases people show the least discrimination. They are ready to burden him with the most trifling desires, not realizing the harm of their lightmindedness.
389. Of course, "imperil" is the main destroyer of psychic energy. But also one should not forget the three transgressors fear, doubt, and self-pity. When the measuring of psychic energy is mechanically established, it will be instructive to see how these obscurants interrupt the flow of energy. This flow of energy is supported by such efforts as are found in self-denial and achievement. These abstract conceptions will bear witness to the acknowledgment of the energy of the Life Principle, which is measurable and conceivable.
I affirm that the fires evoked by the cited rhythm not only can be intensified but also can be of useful service in the strengthening of psychic energy. The Fire of Space, like a sword, smites the obscurations.
390. The effect of power and energy is successful when co-measurement of tension is evidenced. The recognition of psychic energy as a tangible substance will give rise to new thinking throughout all life.
439. It will not be difficult to establish in the near future the projection of the astral body in habitual projections. One can easily systematize the disorganized projections of the astral body, which occur more often than is thought. The Teaching foresees the utilization of all ready forces. Why, then, not see to the utilization of the subtle body in life? The indication regarding the subtle body is a very ancient one. Usually its activity is absolutely excluded from the physical life, but its projection nevertheless takes place. This means that all depends only upon the consciousness and experience. Of course, as in psychic experiments, one should not hurry where two states are involved. For many thousands of years people have separated these two states; therefore, their harmonization should be worked out goal-fittingly. In life itself there should be assumed a status of kinship with these two different states. For instance, when the physical body is immobile it should not be touched and the silence should not be disturbed. When the sight is directed inward one should not bring light near or change the temperature. These conditions are not at all difficult through mutual agreement. Man himself should realize that he annexes the subtle body to the daily physical life. Patiently he will observe the manifestation of the astral body. It will act for a long time independent of the intellect, but then it will enter into the harmony of the higher consciousness. This is not an experiment, but the re-attraction of forces driven away by intellect. But the intellect must also ascend the next step. Thus one can simply direct oneself toward the new steps of existence.
Of course, narcotics and meats are not conducive to the harmonization of the physical and astral planes. Certainly, it is needless to say that any violation is not permissible, for all actions of harmonization have to proceed in co-measurement.
442. Certainly, the wisest course is to partake of food when the body has need of it. Also, the food taken twice daily is sufficient. But in view of the present conditions of life, this rule is difficult to apply; therefore the stomach can be given work at definite hours. The most harmful is consumption of food without definite hours and without need. An orderly life is not something shameful, for one must carefully protect the apparatus built through ages.
It is correct to suppose that man needs very little food, but its quality must be adequate. One should avoid acids and artificial preparations. Decaying butter is even more harmful than dried-out cheese. We vouch, and you should record, that it is easy to not burden oneself with food.
474. The culture of bacteria is useful only as a study of their nature, with the purpose of their destruction. Precisely, one must learn to destroy them. They harm the best secretions and may be considered the enemy of psychic energy. Just as rust stops the wheels, so this waste product of mechanical processes obscures straight-knowledge.
478. We divide bacteria into direct and indirect destroyers. What was said not long ago concerns primarily the first category. At the merging of the astral with the physical body, the former are harmful.
479. L. is especially needed by the sediments of psychic energy, because those crystals can be preserved in the substance of L. The preparation of L. can also cover the nerve centers, where psychic energy settles. These plates will be a panacea to humanity. I spoke long ago about L.
480. The salts of L. are useful not only for gout but also for all kinds of irregular sediments. The alkalization of the accumulated dust cleanses the way for psychic energy. There exist sources containing these energies. One may advise their use for inner consumption.
It can be noticed how distinct elements enter life at needed dates.
482. It is correct not to drive sickness inward. This truth is known to the physician of the body and ought to be know to the physician of the spirit. As hidden decay harms the whole body, so does that which was not outlived by the spirit impede the growth of consciousness.
It is not wise to say "uproot thy filth," for it is better to say "let benevolence fill thy being." Morning will replace the night.
487. Someone will say, "Why preoccupy oneself with Agni Yoga and psychic energy, when we have wireless communication and all kinds of inventions?" But the wireless communication only transmits thoughts, whereas psychic energy not only instantly transmits them, but man receives them immediately for fulfillment. We shall not err in saying that one-half of the world executes the suggested orders and there is no distance for psychic energy.
Again some will say, "But, then, psychic energy is dangerous for governments."
We shall answer, "Certainly, all unapplied energies are dangerous; but they exist, and the time approaches to apply them consciously in life. All have a reserve of psychic energy; but if unutilized it turns into an ugly sediment called sclerosis, whereas one could have given it a wise application.
488. If you are given a piece of cloth sufficient for one garment, you will not be able to make a complete garment out of half. Similarly, if you accept only half the advice, you will not receive the whole result. People like to extract part of the advice and afterward complain about the unfulfillment of their hopes.
Wise advice is a medicine of which one cannot change the composition.
491. Asbestos, a few kinds of mica, manganese, precipitates of soda are as yet not at all utilized for life. What sicknesses can one cure on soda fields? What preparations can asbestos yield? What transmutations does mica offer. About manganese I have already spoken.
492. Agni Yoga approaches in time. Otherwise, who could have said that epidemics of influenza must be cured by psychic energy? Who would give heed to the new kinds of mental, cerebral, and sleeping sicknesses? Not leprosy, or the old form of plague or cholera need be dreaded; for them prophylactic measures exist. But one must ponder over the new enemies created by the conditions of contemporary life. One cannot apply old measures for them, but a new way will be found through expansion of consciousness.
One can trace, within a period of one thousand years, the waves of sicknesses that swept Earth. By these records one can compile a curious tabulation of human failings, because sicknesses naturally show the negative side of our existence.
I hope that alert minds will think about this in time. It is late to construct a pump when the house is on fire.
495. Cancer is the scourge of humanity and must inevitably spread. The chief measures against cancer will be prophylactic ones. Those who do not use meat, wine, tobacco, and narcotics; who keep psychic energy pure; who from time to time undergo a milk diet; who cleanse the stomach and take the water of L., need not think about cancer.
In the beginning of the sickness an operation is performed; but it is senseless if the man after his convalescence returns to his former life. Of course, ultrasound may break up the swelling, but what use will it be if the cause of the poisoning is not removed? Life must be made healthier. It is not wise to invent cures for corpses! Yet one has to pay attention to the quality of the life of the sick ones.
It is customary to think that cancer is hereditary. Of course it must be understood that a poisoned organism gives birth to a similar one. One should protect children immediately; amongst them are not a few remarkable ones.
501. In which house will physic energy grow? Of course in the house that strives toward the future. This is neither simple nor easy. People are too intent on the present. When reward is spoken against, the one intent on the present will not even understand the vitality of this enjoinment. But he who is striving toward the future will not even discuss the conditions of reward, and each reward will be for him like the footwear for the next journey. Then the guiding fires are lighted and psychic energy grows. Everything is developed through experience. Experience is acquired by penetrating into the future, and it is opposed to senseless vegetating.
The highest experiment is the experiment upon oneself. It is centrifugal and centripetal. These simple truths must be repeated. Precisely in the offering of one's own spirit for the sake of humanity is contained the sacrifice and the acquisition. Unconnected antitheses will not form a circle; and without the circle there will be no system of rotation. Each spiral, from above and below, will appear as a circle, and every complication of the picture will vanish if we strive into the future.
One should not complicate the path of psychic energy. It will itself whisper to the sensitive ear when sleep has to be shortened as something unnecessary; when food is to be lessened as unnecessary; when drink should be lessened as unnecessary. Each energy provides nourishment, and psychic energy especially.
The temporary weakening of the extremities should not give anxiety. The poisoned currents of Earth will act first of all upon the extremities. But the natural growth of psychic energy can replace bodily means and help to find the balance between the visible and invisible.
504. Full moon usually favors telepathic manifestations. But there are conditions which alter this state. First of all, it is influenced by certain phases of the sunspots. You may have noticed that telepathic manifestations grow with the chemism of planetary rays, but sunspots influence the most varied sides of existence. Cold, which can reach most disastrous extremes, heat of eruptions, and earthquakes will accompany the changes of the solar aura. One must keep this in mind, because the cold may increase and the earthquakes become more powerful. Thus a transitory manifestation can become final.
539. The conditions of the nerve centers of children should be studied. It is known that these centers are developed extremely individually and unequally. One may find children with one very developed center who can produce a brief action equal to that of adults.
At times certain centers manifest sickliness, to the perplexity of physicians, since physicians do not accept the evidence of nerve centers in a child. Whereas according to these signs of sickliness and other unusual manifestations, one can judge the essence of the body and the quality of spirit. How much good could result from such observations! How many possibilities could be safeguarded! Thus the accumulation of psychic energy could begin correctly.
For old spirits who have experienced many reincarnations, the period after the seventh year will be quite burdensome, and especially difficult the one after fourteen years. After fourteen years the psychic energy has already come into action. The spirit has already torn itself away from former existences and the burden of the new unknown path depresses it. The accumulated values vaguely agitate one, and the essence strives back to where the possibilities of consciousness were great.
The correct supervision of the nerve centers of children is needed for the future. There has existed a worthless opinion that the spirit cannot master a new body and that is the reason for children's absurdities. But, quite the contrary, when the centers do not work correctly, the sediments of psychic energy are not produced, and the spirit has no substance for manifestation.
The care about children's nerve centers can be considered to be the care about the future race.
542. The so-called fourth dimension is a property of psychic energy. The properties of psychic energy will afford the expansion of all conceptions.
552. During physical weakness psychic experiments are difficult. Fatigue may be overcome by a short but complete rest.
553. Only a body predisposed to a sickness can be infected. Only a spirit ready to accept psychic energy receives it. If people would realize that the accumulation of psychic energy is needed not only for the current life but as a constant and inalienable acquisition and privilege, such consciousness would greatly erase the boundaries of lives. Should not a consciousness of life care for the future along with the past? This is the immediate duty of every scientist. At one time scientists intercepted life--is it not their mission now to extend life into Infinity?
The words of the priesthood have pointed to the life of the hereafter, but those testimonies have become absolutely groundless. Former miracles have become obsolete; the consciousness is attracted by reality. The alternation of incarnations is attested by ancient as well as the latest teachings. In your literature the mentioning of the words incarnation and karma have become common. Nevertheless, this reality enters little into consciousness; otherwise it would transform the whole of life. But the memories of men are burdened with strange considerations. They are gladly occupied with unnecessary things, but the human imagination is not trained for basic conceptions. However, one hour of reasonable talk can change the nature of a child forever.
The never-dying man--will this not be worthy of the future? The rising of the Phoenix out of his own ashes is ordained from antiquity. The Phoenix is in need of wings, but psychic energy will provide the best rainbow wings.
568. The growth of consciousness is accompanied by spasms of anguish, and this is verily unavoidable. The non-conformity of Infinity with earthly reality can but call forth the feeling of a just realization. There is no way to Infinity without sensing all surroundings. Be assured that the greater the consciousness, the greater the anguish.
Who, then, can sense the beauty of Cosmos? Whoever has heard the music of the spheres even once will understand the earthly imperfection produced by the present state of humanity. One must consciously fight these spasms, understanding their inevitability.
569. The best protection not only against sickness but also against hostile manifestations will always lie in the conscious application of psychic energy. Its development is the most vital task of humanity.
573. Nervous choking often results from overburdening of the Chalice without conscious use of it. Children can suffer from the same thing, proving that the former experiences were important. Of course, solicitous care and quiet occupation will balance the struggle between spirit and body. The throat, teeth, and eyes may likewise remind one about the struggle of the accumulations without any manifestation. Likewise, one should pay attention to what may be called consumption, which also may be provoked by the center of the Chalice.
Long ago the significance of Manas was pointed out; it is impossible that such a treasury as the Chalice should have no importance for all that surrounds it. There can be palliative measures, such as ammonia, menthol, eucalyptus, and cedar resin. But these will only ease the condition, whereas the actual panacea will be the cultivation of psychic energy.
585. He who wishes to make use of the foundations of Vedic medicine acts correctly. Notwithstanding the later additions, the essence of the Vedas remains useful, for to each searching investigator this sequential method remains new in its perception of the properties of vegetable precipitates. Instead of a crude listing of plants and other products of nature, a precise definition of the condition and the parts of the plants gives completely different results. Attention is paid also to the conditions of cosmic chemism. From hoary antiquity, these conclusions can create joy for the present-day observer.
586. One can easily strengthen the action of vegetable substances by increasing the metalization of the soil. Thus, even slow-acting medicaments will acquire a powerful and quick reaction. One may make instructive experiments upon generations of strengthened seeds. With short-lived plants, these experiments do not require many years. Even the third generation will show strong changes.
596. Many peoples have observed the successive significance of the centers. Incomprehensible terms often have corresponded to the most real designations. When you hear the word Abramram , it will be a reminder about the center of the Chalice, where is concentrated the straight-knowledge predestined for the future evolution. When you hear about "fiery wings," it will mean the centers of the shoulders. Likewise, the "five summits of treasures" will be the centers of Brahmarandhra, the wrists, and the knees. When a sudden weakness is felt under the knees, or a strain in the wrists, this will mean the sharpening of Brahmarandhra. Countless observations can be made that will reveal the inexhaustible qualities of the organism, so shamefully neglected.
601. Scientists speaking about the subconscious, about cerebral and nervous reflexes, about animal magnetism, about telepathy, certainly speak of one and the same thing--of psychic energy. But this term is somehow not pronounced. These snatches of knowledge are begging to be united into one current, but superstition hinders generalization of the facts. Pure science is not afraid of the alleys. Now attention is being paid to the study of secretions, and maybe this trend of observation of the secretions of glands will call attention to the existence also of other precipitations. Their secretions attracted attention only recently, although ancient medicine pointed out long ago the importance of secretions. This question was shyly avoided, although all nature proclaimed it. But is it possible that dialectic materialism is only limitation? The development of consciousness brings us closer to the sensing of the entire mighty energy. Is it possible to think as formerly, with only half a brain, not worrying about the locked-up treasures?
603. Notice that a deep sigh accompanies the action of psychic energy. Does not this property attest to the full tangibility of this energy? Point out the symptoms of this energy scattered everywhere. A path can be constructed out of these milestones.
606. Some nervous diseases are cured by a change of residence. One may regard this condition as a whim, but other causes also may be found. Air is as mineralized and magnetic as water. We apply waters of different composition. Why, then should air not have any effect upon different centers?
Much is spoken about prana; but pure prana is inaccessible on Earth, except on the heights, where few dare remain. In lower strata prana is mineralized and receives the influence of opposite magnetic waves. Certainly, a change of residence may lead one to beneficial combinations of prana, and may affect curatively the condition of the nerves. Unfortunately, so far the air in homes is generally regarded as either pure or impure. Indeed, every change of air has importance, since it influences different groups of nerves. Our Brother who has been a shoemaker sometimes changed his handicraft for gardening. This is wise, for the seed growing in a sprout radiates a special tension of psychic energy. Likewise, the awakened life of the morning sun acts with special vitality, after the symbol of the pralaya of night, in calling forth psychic energy. Likewise, the awakened life of the seed like morning, sends forth its emanations of prayer. Let us note carefully all benevolent influences.
607. If, instead of courts and prosecutions, people would apply psychic energy, the incurable disease of crime would become a mere matter of ordinary investigations. Our physicians also should look into this stage of obsession. Combining psychic energy with our usual interpretation is harmful.
609. Many illnesses are prevented by psychic energy. It may be said that some organisms are predisposed or not disposed toward certain sicknesses. But what this protection or weakness consists of no one can say positively. However, observations upon psychic energy would give the best answer.
628. I have already said that mysteries and miracles have disappeared. In their place there must be affirmed in the consciousness the understanding of psychic energy, by which life-engendering forces are set into motion. Thus let us remember.
Centers unknown to medicine and called "obscure" are revealing themselves as movers responsible for our thoughts. Soon these levers will find their place and will merit chapters in books. So I have said.
633. What was related about the vision above the Chalice has a scientific meaning. Imbuing space with intensified thought, we clothe particles of our strivings with a definite image. Thus, out of elemental matter we engender a desired image. This formation remains near the place of its engendering, fortified by our thoughts. The eyes of a child or a refined consciousness can catch this formation. Similar observation is useful in observing creativeness of thought. Of course, to be successful one has to preserve the aura of the place and unceasingly stratify the transmissions. The hour before dawn and the rhythm of a chant will help.
Likewise one can observe the growth of hair, as you have heard. The capillary cells of hair, as conductors of consciousness, are instructive. Also the pores of the skin afford some very important observations.
644. You submit to examinations by various physicians. You allow your body to be cut by the scalpel. You permit physical experiments. But when you are spiritually ill and your consciousness is dim and you do not perceive the approaching light, still you reject the thought of the regeneration of the shield. I have said that your shield is in the realization of Our manifestations. Accept this advice, and heal the consciousness! You complain about the liver, but verify your thoughts!
650. Even your physicians assert that during nervous excitement the strength increases tenfold. Thus they recognize psychic energy. But they add that nervous excitements are brief and cause a breakdown. Precisely for this is the Yoga needed, so that while increasing the ascents one may be saved from collapse. Collapses are brought on by a lack of realization and the non-application of psychic energy. The ignoramus skips as if lame, but the knowing one surmounts the most unattainable heights.
Infinity I, 1930
2. Where the earthly crust ends for geologists it begins for Us. Impregnated with the emanations of your actions and saturated with the crystals of darkness of human thought, this crust presents a resistance harder than flint. But through the ceaseless striving of thought this dense sphere, which holds Earth tightly in its clutches, can disperse like a thin vapor. Should we not dissolve these accumulations, when we may choose between the thread into Infinity or a pile of obstructions?
Is it so difficult for the consciousness to propel itself to that source the streams of which are endless? Can the obstacles be so resistive when the Teaching says that it is easy to lift the curtain of the future? Decide to apply this to life, so that the ability to make use of Our advices should not be limited to exclamations or assurances, and let your spirit say, "The wisdom of the Lord is the power of the far-off worlds. The Fire of Infinity and the radiation of the Star of the Mother of the World are sending to us the affirmation of our being!
If one spatial thought can uplift the nations, and if one spatial thought fixed upon an earthly cliche can give to the planet a precious science, would those who reduce the wisdom of the ages into grains of dust deny that, while yesterday the sun shone, tomorrow the stream of its rays may be exhausted?
Verily, My advice is that you become imbued with the realization of Infinity. Prana is saturated with power; try to extract its gifts! With one sigh one can surpass the labor of ages, but one glance of denial can erase a pattern preordained by ages
4. Human consciousness can be directed toward the disciplining of unbridled and unconscious thoughts. But to impart too much is difficult when so many minds are creating chaos. The development of straight-knowledge will help humanity. When straight-knowledge will dictate where is chaos and where Infinity, when straight-knowledge will distinguish a cosmic manifestation from an arbitrary one, then humanity will become the possessor of the key of knowledge. We appreciate that science produced the telescope, but the telescope of straight-knowledge penetrates into Infinity. Your telescope demands expenditures and exertion, but when one possesses the sensitiveness of Our apparatus one penetrates everywhere.
The mastery over unconscious thoughts will provide the understanding of the dimensions of Infinity. Limitless is the stream of thought! Verily, I say, the possibilities flowing from the streams of luminaries are endless. The luminaries in the invisible and visible spheres battle for the affirmation of Truth. Rays can heal; rays can create; rays can protect like a shield; rays can manifest the flame of the Chalice.
Often you hear the outcry, the moan, "Why is there leprosy, why calamity, why is the evidence of beauty obscured by a twisted smile?" Poor humanity, We regard your ailments as your own progeny. Evolution does not need so many impediments. The ladder of ascent does not need so many superfluous steps. Our Shield does not need your recognition, but you are in need of Our Shield.
6. Understanding of Infinity does not detach man from Earth. The disclosure of new possibilities does not sever man from Earth. What is said about the Samyama of yogis is not just invention; it is a scientific method confirming cosmic forces.
The broad utilization of metals in medicine, in India, is the result of contact with the Fire of Space. The consciousness of the yogis is in communion with the luminaries. One may receive in life the effects of the spheres. The human attitude toward labor, and human reluctance to change the tendency of thought, are like clutches.
Has it been ordained by the Lords that the concept of cosmos should be diminished into your human understanding of a short cycle? The span of understanding will define the outline of possibilities. Everything gains substantial nourishment from the same source, Prana, the manifested power of Cosmos. You accept the affirmation of this need quite simply; with equal simplicity accept the fact of psychic influence of the rays. When you will accept the wisdom of the ages according to Our Indications with your entire being, then the whirlwind of calamities will break against a wall of light. The scope of your possibilities depends on your acceptance or rejection of the Shield.
Do not reject that degree of Spatial Fire which opens the way to the far-off worlds. In it is contained the shield of the future. The manifestations of clouds, winds and rain are the irrigation of the planet; but the assertion of cosmic forces cannot be conceived as being only atmospheric manifestations.
At the threshold of night no streams of light appear. Light the torches!
12. To reverberate with the rhythm of the Cosmos means to realize the entire magnitude of Infinity. Three principles are affirmed by the way of evolution. Begin to show understanding of the pledge. Do not--indeed do not--manifest indifference to the Source which nurtures you and all that exists! Ponder deeply and you will see that the great Spiritual Toilers of humanity have nurtured their psychic energy by merging with the Infinite. Their striving ecstasy toward the highest beauty was limitless! Their achievement toward the manifested Ordainment was boundless! I have said that the merging with the cosmic rhythm will provide the synthesis of All-being, in the invisible and the visible.
Each cult in turn has pointed out the symbols of synthesis, but with the mutilation of the concept there have remained only distortions of the ancient mysteries.
One cannot predetermine a cosmic manifestation, but it is possible to evoke a cosmic whirlwind; it is likewise possible to evoke from space elements needed by our planet.
You have already experienced the two sharp points piercing the region of the shoulder blades, and with the same piercing centers of the lungs may be opened. These centers control prana. Only to the higher spirits do We send these rays. To those who have not realized the beauty and power of Cosmos in its entire scope, this experience is inaccessible. Only straight-knowledge is applicable in this cosmic experience. Therefore say, "Verily, I affirm the beauty of Infinity! I wish, O Lord, to sense the pulsation of the grandeur of the Cosmos!"
15. One must choose between the darkness of error and the grandeur of Truth. The spirit will determine the understanding affirmed by ages. It is unbefitting to traverse by way of a very low arch, starting from a point on a low plane and returning to the same plane. Why waste the energy, if we must knock again at the lowest gates? Prepare for your spirit a beautiful garden, not in the desert waste but on the summit of attainment.
It is ordained for each one to adorn the path of evolution. The help of the spatial thoughts is ordained for each one. The Treasury of Infinity is open for each one who penetrates into the understanding of cosmic forces.
It is no joy to discover what saturates the strata of your planet. On one cup of the scale let us place the manifestation of all vices anger, cowardice, treason, prejudice, hypocrisy, complacency. On the other cup let us place the impelling force of psychic energy, straight-knowledge, affirmation of the Covenant of the Wise Ones, inviolability of the Origins, gratitude to the Shield, attainment of knowledge, and unwaveringness on the path opened by Infinity.
Since it was the Lord Buddha who defined the essence of the human Ego as a process, we can accept this formula of "The Lion." In your daily life accustom yourselves to the thought of eternal motion and do not tarry in the recesses of darkness. Creativeness attracts the creative power. Therefore, observe the sparks of Cosmos.
Let us choose between ignorance and the radiance of Infinity!
20. It is customary to consider karma as the will and recompense determining the course of one's life. It is also customary to consider karma as retribution. But in its true significance, karma means labor. Do not limit the work of the laboratory of the spirit and you will see the results.
When the spirit is seduced by Maya and by the manifestations of self-satisfaction, then a hammer and the development of straight-knowledge are required. When the spirit is dazzled by the glamor of wealth, without realizing its impermanence and considering that a bar of gold leads to happiness, then let us recall all the menaces of sickness and disaster. But the warrior of spirit glows as a manifestation of light; he is illumined by the rays of the fires of Infinity. The response must be understood, and one must strive to the Cosmos with all fires and all flowers.
Upon the summit of consciousness is affirmed the path of the Lord. On the summit of consciousness achievement and evolution resound in unison. Eternal, indefatigable is the labor of ascent! This eternal motion is your karma!
You are right--only currents of will direct the karma. But to stop the course of karma is as perilous as to invoke eternal night. With what will you fill the Chalice of Amrita if you sink into the pool of darkness? We shall answer that the ocean of actions is verily more beautiful!
22. Spirit-knowledge is revealed in the consciousness of a true Agni Yogi. The consciousness that embraces the currents of Space and grasps the formula of psychic energy may enter the vortex of Kundalini.
When humanity will learn to realize and coordinate world events with the complexities of Cosmos the progress of insight will be affirmed. The manifestation of the chain of events, and a full realization of that which as the heritage of the ages proceeds from one period to another, can impel the consciousness toward the understanding of Cosmic Infinity.
Spirit, glance back! Whither hast thy past knowledge led thee? Where dost thou perceive boundaries? Where is cessation? Where is permanency? And where dost thou see the manifestation of submissiveness? It is said, "I do not see all these declarations; verily, I see that endless Domain which has created our being!"
Thou, spirit, striving to the Creator of Cosmos, turn to the Mother of the World. Proclaim what thou seest. Space is revealed as manifesting the utmost creativeness. The immensity of Space and the inalienability of the cosmic forces enrich the kernel of our being. The levers of evolution are the finest energies which may become the possession of men.
When you will accept the predestined, then the direct result will lead you on. When you will understand how to fly in the kernel of the spirit, then you will communicate with the higher worlds.
Learn to understand all the grandeur of flight in the kernel of the spirit!
23. Whence came the engulfing wave that obscured the consciousness? "Religare" was pronounced even in antiquity. The property of causativeness and resultantness--the law of concatenation of the Universe--applies to this same manifestation of a bond with Infinity. Humanity is bound to the Cosmos by inseverable bonds. It is not difficult to establish that immutable point where all things meet--where the earthly accumulations meet the strata of higher spheres. By the Will of Cosmos all things are attracted to each other. All strives toward mutual creation. "Religare" is bestowed on humanity in the form of a religion for unification, for the development of community, for the avowal of the Primary Source, which contains all principles of Being and which creates all substances for our good.
The concatenation of the Universe with all higher spheres should be adopted by the consciousness as a saving anchor in the advancement of the higher foundations of the future. The scientists have already found that which is most evident, but much is as yet unperceived. It is not denied to humanity to draw from Space, but the principle of prejudice is destructive. The action of Earth's magnetism upon an apple is recognized by all, but the realization of the very great Magnet of Infinity, is immerged by ignorance. The ozone of Space and the rays of far-off worlds will provide the planetary substance for the accumulation of new energies.
79. How can one attain the consciousness of striving toward perfection? Not by asserting the termination of the entire structure of Cosmos; not by denying the interrelation of the higher worlds with our planet; not by professing that there is any deadness in spatial forces. Spirit is affirmed as fire, and the cosmic flame is without cessation. Following the law of Fire, we can establish the way toward perfection. The fire of the sun and the fire of the spirit are our creative forces. The warmth of the sun and the warmth of the heart are our life-givers.
Differentiation of the elements predicates the variety of forms but not the growth of antagonism. When in contact with each other, light and darkness may become co-workers. The tendency of human thought is to inject into life the conception of sharp demarcations. In the higher worlds, light and darkness cooperate. The power of cosmos spreads without limits.
Humanity has violated the law of cooperation and is expiating this transgression. Each Lord brought back to the planet the balance which had been lost, but the human spirit is so impregnated with the feeling of antagonism that it cannot reach the goal designated by the Lord. Thus, humanity is developing dreadful controversies; and the waves will engulf the thinking, which is violated by the denial of Light as the Mother of the World.
The attainment of the inner Fire, the degree reached by the Mother of Agni Yoga, is the rarest achievement. This degree of Fire is called the degree of attained Arhat. This living Fire was known in antiquity. The alchemist knew about it. The attainment of this higher degree of powerful flame may be manifested only by that spirit who lives the psycho-life of the whole heart. The mightiest lever of Cosmos, and the most sacred, is the heart. Its consciousness fills Space; its light illumines Cosmos.
118. The foundation of creative life can be affirmed only by psycho-dynamics. Psycho-dynamics can be affirmed upon the principles of the spatial energies. Whether the spirit manifests a cosmic and conscious aspect or affirms the consciousness by its attunement with the spatial cliche, the principle of inducing the manifestations of cosmic forces by way of fusion is one. Only by this unification are the forms of space created. Diffusion cannot produce entities which are not subject to the same law. The cause of human ills is in its inconsistency of strivings. Cosmos, in creating, requires stratifications which can grow step by step. When humanity will understand that striving leads to the cognition of these steps, then one can vouch for the path leading to Infinity.
Centuries have been required for the filling of the clefts which have rent the Earth; instead of new stratifications, it has been necessary to fill in the earthly stronghold. Much did the Lords refill and much did the people destroy. By this principle of alternating construction and destruction, humanity advances in evolution. Realization of Infinity will lend progress to the consciousness, and humanity will advance!
291. The pulsation of the life process is known as a manifestation of the Cosmic Magnet. All matter in Cosmos is upheld by this vital pulsation. Whether these pulsations be an affirmation of one combination or the tension of transmutation, the pulsation itself is the basis. All the forces of humanity's striving are dependent on these pulsations. The creativeness of psychic energy is an expression of this pulsation. It is impossible to arrest it! And those who affirm that nothing in Cosmos is made for destruction can be supported
